Agency Uploaders & Submission Utilities

Tim Plumb, xMedia program manager, guest authors today's blog posting.

Former users of iView MediaPro may recall the Auto Uploaders & Submission Utilities that iView produced to allow users to easily upload their digital images to a number of professional stock agencies direct from the application.

Each of the tools stepped the user through the various validation and submission requirements for their agency and either collated the files locally ready to be burnt to disk or FTP'd them directly into their private user account on the agency's server.  Either way, submitting images went from a manual to a pretty much automated process and insured that there were no suprises when submissions got returned because something was missing or wrong in the submission.

We are very pleased to announce that the work to migrate these tools to work with Expression Media 2 has been completed and that you can now
download and start working with them right away.

If you are an Expression Media 2 user who submits work to Alamy, Corbis, or Getty Images
then feel free to download these powertoys and try them out.

[kb--I'll add one note that the PowerToys only work with xm2 and aren't configured to work with xm1.]

Personal blog

This blog has turned into a purely business-oriented thing, so I've started another (http://bierflier.blogspot.com/) to capture my adventures and thoughts mostly about flying, but also about ham radio, singing, and however else I spend my time away from business.  If any of you are pilots (or think you might like to be some day) would be thrilled to have you stop by.  Smile

iView web site and forums -- a change

Good morning from soggy Seattle.  It's hard (for me) to believe, but it's been nearly 2-1/2 years since iView joined Microsoft and three years since I began working with these fine folks.  In that time we've rev'd iView three times and have released four significant revs of Expression Media.

With xm2 sp1 we've reached our goal of shipping a stable and predictable platform on which to build new functionality.  That's been our goal over that whole period:  Build a reliable workflow tool that people can count on.  Now we can move that tool forward in good conscience, which is precisely what we're doing with xm3.

As we make this transition internally, we've been reviewing activity on the iView web site.  We're still seeing a fair amount of traffic on the site, which is very encouraging.  Even though our hosting agreements are expiring, we're making arrangements to keep all the relevant iView content available.  We'll be rolling over to new servers in about a week.

One important change that we're making is to disable new posts to the iView forum, effective in about a week.  The reasons for this are fairly prosaic:  Hosting contracts expiring, requirement to move to Microsoft-hosted servers, inability to run the technologies that support the current forums on the new servers, inadequate time and energy to reconstitute the forums with updated technology.

So, we're working to preserve all the existing content in searchable form so that none of it is lost.  We're working to make that content also available on the new servers.  We'll ask that new threads about iView MediaPro migrate to the Expression Media forums and will put those pointers into the forum archive so that folks can still discuss issues and topics that arise with iVMP.

In summary, you should be able to search a complete archive of the iView forums after the move.  New forum topics should be started on the Expression Media forum.  The rest of the iView web site content is being migrated to a new set of servers and we're working to get the DNS mappings updated so that all the existing URLs continue to work.

xm2 sp1

Very happy about this one. :)  Proud to announce the release of Expression Media 2 Service Pack 1.  The update is available for free to folks who have xMedia 2 already installed.  The Windows update is only 3MB and is available via both Microsoft Update and the Microsoft Download Center.  The Macintosh installer combines all languages into a single installer and is available via Macintosh Auto-Update (the Microsoft Office update mechanism) or via the MDC.  An updated version of xMedia Reader is available via the MDC.

This is a simultaneous worldwide release in all previously-supported languages.

This is the reference release for Expression Media.  Anyone running xm2 should update both for the fixes (over 400) and the feature improvements (18 specific feature areas enhanced).  For the list of features, please see David Sayed's blog.  I'll update information on the fixes later.  I've got to run to a meeting with the Mac Office folks right now.  :)

Windows Scripting Guide available

Hi folks.  We've just posted the Windows Scripting Guide for xm2 on the Microsoft Download Center.  English only; sorry about that.

Oh, BTW, we're assuming that the Object Model will change significantly in xm3.  It is not a design goal that the OM be backward compatible or that any existing scripts work with xm3.  We believe this is critical to advancing automatability of xm3 and isn't a trade-off that we're making lightly.  Still, we'd appreciate hearing from you if you have something to say about this.

Leopard and xm3?

We're thinking about leveraging a number of the new Leopard-only (OS X 10.5) OS features for Expression Media 3.  This would mean that xm3 would run only on Leopard or newer (Snow Leopard, at that point in time) systems.  We'd love to hear our POV on that:  xmbugs@microsoft.com, or start a thread on the forums.

Assume that we'll release on a similar schedule to xm2:  Late-Spring for English, Summer for other language versions.  I'm not ready to talk about specific dates, but that's close enough for the purposes of this conversation.  :)

Meet in London 18/19 September?

David Sayed has blogged about a possible impromptu iView/xMedia user meet-up in London on 18th or 19th September.  A couple of us will be in town on our way to Photokina and would love to chat as we did with folks at the Microsoft Pro Photo Summit back in July.  Please have a look at David's post for more info.

iView MediaPro Support ending

It's been a bit over two years since iView MediaPro joined the Microsoft family of products.  Since that time Microsoft has continued to provide free support for iView customers (kudos to António and Gonçalo in Portugal, Will and Sekar in Fargo!!!), including an offer for a free upgrade from iVMP 3 to Expression Media.  We've also maintained the lively iView forums.  Actually, Simon from iView has maintained them (you can thank him by sending a note to simon@iview-multimedia.com).

At the time of the acquisition we announced our intentions to maintain iView customer support for one year.  It's been two.  But now it's time to focus iView support on the forums.

As of 1st September 2008, email support for iView Multimedia products will cease.  We plan to continue the iView forums due to the great content and lively discussions that continue there.

xMedia keeps getting better!  E-mail, phone, and forum support is available to xMedia users.  Information on upgrading is available on the Expression Media site.  And the dev team is always listening on xmbugs@microsoft.com.

Please direct any questions or comments to me:  kevin.bier@microsoft.com

xm2 sp1

We're working hard on a service pack release to Expression Media 2.  We're planning to ship this free update sometime over the next two months.  The release includes some refinements to xm2 features and well over 100 fixes and some further performance optimizations.  We'll make a detailed list available as the release becomes imminent.

We're trying something new (for us) this time and are working toward a simultaneous update in all supported languages.  We plan to release the update for download as well as Microsoft Update and Macintosh Auto-Update (direct to your desktop).

Finally, now would be a great time to hear from you with your feature wants/suggestions for Expression Media 3.  Please send your thoughts/requests/rants to xmbugs@microsoft.com.

Digital Arts review

Nice, brief review in Digital Arts that awards 4 out of 5 stars.  The only "Con" is that QuickTime is required.  Happily, that's not completely the case for the Windows version:  There are now only a few features that require QuickTime but the app can be installed without QuickTime on the Windows box.  Maybe that's worth another half star?  :)

80 degrees at 10:30 in Hockinson today.  That's pretty hot for the west side of the Pacific Northwest.  Apparently Summer's finally here after a long (long) and cloudy Spring.

Off to Nashville, TN, this coming week for a week at the International Barbershop Convention to listen to the world's best Barbershop Quartets and Choruses compete for top honors.  This ain't your grandpa's barbershop but represents fine a cappella singing in the Barbershop style.  Webcasts are available here.  Want to hear last year's quartet champs?  Max Q's home page has links to audio samples.  Next to flying (N7136, 1974 Mooney M20E), I love Barbershop the most!

What's new in xm2 revisited

I had previously relied on a list of new xm2 features that appeared on our beta site.  That site's long gone and I have neglected to post the list here, so am remedying that now.  In addition to the new feature work we fixed something north of 400 bugs reported by users or found during internal testing.  At any rate, here's the feature list:

What's new in Expression Media 2?

Support of new file formats

Expression Media 2 now supports the Microsoft Office 2007/Mac Office 2008 file formats DOCX, DOTX, PPTX, POTX, XLSX and XLT.  On Windows, Expression Media 2 also now supports XAML, Expression Design, CSS, JS, and VBS file formats.

Shared Catalogs

New catalog locking enables multiple users to share a single catalog.  A single catalog can be opened and edited by one user, while others can access and view the same catalog.

Expression Media 2 now performs much more quickly across networks, and enables catalog locking so multiple users can access and view a catalog from a shared location while someone has it open and is editing it.

Updates to the Info and Organize panels

Each panel contains new menus in annotation fields that include options for sorting media items using either a union or an intersection of keywords.

Hierarchical keywords

With the new Keyword finder display in the Organize panel, you can create and view hierarchies of keywords for your media files.  For example, you can describe the properties of a photograph.  Instead of merely tagging your photograph "Europe," you can create a keyword hierarchy that specifies the country, the city, the street, and even the physical location of the scene (for example, "upstairs and to the right").  Or, instead of tagging a photograph "dogs," you can create a keyword hierarchy that specifies animals, mammals, and even specific breeds.  The Keyword finder gives you many options for clearly and accurately categorizing your media files.

Enhanced performance

Common tasks such as importing media, building catalogs, creating thumbnails and accessing networked file shares are now faster.  Also, smart importing functionality prevents corrupted files from hindering import.  Expression Media 2 will continue the import even when it encounters corrupt files and will report any problematic files once the import is complete.

Windows Live Virtual Earth positioning

Using Windows Live Virtual Earth technology, you can locate the origin of any photograph that includes GPS information. Expression Media 2 displays the location on a virtual world map.

Multi-monitor Light Table

You can increase your productivity by having the Light Table open on one monitor while your catalog and tools are open on another.  There's no longer a need to switch back and forth between views.

Changed QuickTime functionality (Windows only)

Although Expression Media 2 no longer requires that you have QuickTime installed, you will see a "QT" logo next to features that depend on QuickTime in order to run properly.  These include:

    • Slideshow as movie
    • Convert sound files
    • Convert movie files
    • Image rotate
    • Image Editor
    • PDF Maker

If you already have QuickTime installed, the "QT" logo will disappear and all features will work as expected.

Windows Imaging Components (Windows only)

If QuickTime is not installed, then Expression Media 2 uses the new WIC (Windows Imaging Component) for image encoding, decoding, and transformation, which are functions that QuickTime performed. For certain file types, you will need to install individual codecs.  For more information, go to Codecs for Windows.

You can still install QuickTime for extended file support.

Catalog media from storage devices using Autoplay (Windows only)

You can place your files in a catalog directly from portable storage devices, such as USB drives and flash memory cards.  When you insert storage devices that contain your media files, the resulting AutoPlay dialog box will offer you the choice of importing and cataloging those files immediately.

Quick Look support on Leopard (Mac only)

With Expression Media 2, you can use Quick Look to see thumbnails and previews of documents without opening the document in its original application.  You can preview media items that are in a catalog without having to open the catalog.

Uploader Utility

A new image uploader enables you to post your images to professional stock photo services such as Alamy, Corbis, Digital Railroad and Getty Images without leaving the Expression Media workspace.  <-- Note :  This hasn't been released yet but is going through final security reviews now and I expect it out within a few weeks.  It will be released as a set of separate downloadables.

xm2 catalogs are backwards-compatible with xm1 and iView MediaPro 3.

funny(-ish)

We just held a signing "ceremony" for a bunch of boxed product for xm2.  We live on the first floor and we signed on the fourth, so took the elevator up.  I found it funny that we got the whole team into that single elevator.  Microsoft may be a Really Big Company, but not every team is.  :)

Send bugs and product ideas here, please

The most direct way to reach the xMedia dev team is to send mail to xmbugs@microsoft.com.  Your mail lands in the inboxes of developers, testers, program managers, support folks, and marketing folks.  I encourage you to use this address to let us know about bugs and to suggest feature ideas refinements or new ideas).

If you're having an issue with xMedia, please also post on the forums so that all users have visibility of the issue and, hopefully, the resolution as well.

Thanks and Good Weekend,

Updated camera support (D60, others)

I just noticed that Nikon has released an updated NEF codec for WIC (v1.3) on their codec page:  http://www.nikonimglib.com/nefcodec/  This version adds support for the D60, and perhaps other models that I've missed.

We've received the updated SDK from Nikon and will be adding that update into our late-summer service pack, but the WIC codec gives you support now.  Highly recommended.

Apple has also updated Leopard (10.5.3) with support for the following cameras:  Hasselblad CFV-16, Hasselblad H3D-31, Hasselblad H3D-31II, Leaf Aptus 54S, Leaf Aptus 65S, Nikon D60, Olympus E-3, Pentax *ist DL2, Pentax *ist DS2, Pentax K100D Super, Sony DSLR-A200 and the Sony DSLR-A350.  xMedia, of course, picks up support for these formats/cameras as well.

Cheers,

     * Pages are in English but the builds they are linked to are localized.

UPDATE, 18 April 08:  Happily, the Mac link, below, didn't have to change, though we've updated the payload to work better with Mac Auto-Update.  All's well.

UPDATE, 17 April 08:  We needed to pull the Mac download today due to an error in how we were handling Mac Auto-Update.  The fix is built and verified but not yet loaded to the Download Center.  I'll update you with a new link on Friday.  Apologies for the slip.

Morning, folks.  I'm happy to announce that an update that fixes the above-listed items is now available on the Microsoft Download Center for both Mac and Windows versions of Expression Media.  This is an update to xMedia SP1 (service pack 1) that we're calling a "roll-up" release.  Mac is here, Windows is here.

Many thanks to Nikon for the updated SDK that gives us D3 and D300 support!  We worked together getting that release ready to go for several months.  The short filenames (8.3 format) and duplicate folders issues that folks encountered when installing QuickTime 7.4 have been resolved.  And an old issue that's plagued international users with garbage characters in Custom Fields has also been resolved.

We'll have patches out on Mac Auto-Update and Microsoft Update soon.  We're shooting for next week on MAU and two weeks after that on MU.

I'd like to take a moment to praise the product team for getting this release done concurrent with our release work for xm2 (both the English and International releases are running hot-and-heavy right now).  Thank you, folks.

Everyone should take this update for the QuickTime fix even if the other fixes don't happen to be interesting to you.

Best wishes from cloudy Seattle.  Supposed to snow here this weekend.  Eighty-something here last weekend.  Wild.

Silverlight

Silverlight is going to be a Big Deal(tm).  It's a very cool technology and it's incredibly relevant to how the internet is evolving.  For folks who are interested in All Sorts of Information about Silverlight, I just read Vikrant's 101 Resources For Learning, Developing And Experiencing Silverlight.  If you'd like pretty much a one-stop-shopping place for links to Silverlight info, this is a great place to start!

Silverlight is interesting for xMedia, too.  We've added a couple new Web Gallery templates in xm2 that give you the seed of some much nicer slideshow-type galleries.  There's a lot of capability in Silverlight to do some very nice, professional presentation, transitions, and navigation built off these templates.  Go at it!

If you come up with Galleries that you'd like to share, please do!  You can upload your gallery(ies) to the Expression Community site's submission page.   More information is available on the Community Site.  English site is here, other languages are available via a drop-down in the upper-right corner of this page.

Silverlight is also interesting to us as a way to deliver part of the xMedia user experience.  I expect that we'll have something interesting to show in this regard in the previews of xm3 we plan to have available in our preview program late this calendar year.  :)  More about that in coming months.

Springtime in Seattle.  It's a wonderful time.  xm2 is nearly ready for you, xm3 is beginning.  Best wishes for a glorious Spring/Autumn.

kb

Expression Media 2 and a brief look forward

All's still on track for release of xm2 in a bit under a month.  We've taken nearly 300 fixes since the beta.  Thank you to everyone who participated in the beta and sent feedback.

We're still hearing from folks, though the volume of comments has understandably slowed.  We're still listening, though!  We're nearly locked now for this release.  Things that we hear about now will be triaged into an update that we're planning for late in the summer.

Emphasis for the update is to drive our "bug debt" to zero.  We're still hearing about about bugs and behaviors that have been bothering folks since iView days and we're nearly through that backlog.  :)  xMedia 2 is the most stable, highest-quality release since iVMP 2 and, I believe, exceeds even that bar.

As we begin our planning for xMedia 3, I expect us to emphasize a more robust catalog, improved sharing, deeper points of integration with Mac Office and Expression Studio, improved workflow for folks who create assets for delivery to screens, more about Silverlight and the cross-platform story offered there, and more.  We're still a pretty small team, but by getting the long tail of bug debt behind us, we can focus all our energies on refining the app, increasing it's robustness, and deepening our links into creative workflows for individuals, workgroups, and larger organizations.

I'd still appreciate hearing from you about your ideas for xm3 and beyond.  We have over a hundred suggestions from folks in our tracking system and we'll review every one of them over the next couple weeks as planning continues.  I'd sure love to add your ideas and needs to the stack.  I'll keep you up to date on how we're progressing.

Peace,

New Community site for Expression

In celebration of the announcement of Expression 2 at MIX'08, our marketing friends have stood up a whole new community site for Expression.

The Gallery section provides a spot for folks to contribute scripts or HTML Gallery templates or Silverlight Gallery templates (for xm2).  If you've got something you'd like to share with other xMedia users (maybe some iView scripts ported to xMedia?), this is a great place to do it!

Also included on the site is a much-improved forums interface.  Our Support team hangs out there quite a lot and the dev team pops by when we can spare a few minutes.

The iView forums are still alive and kicking, too.  Simon Street of iView is keeping things running for all the folks who hang there.  We're planning to close the iView web site after 30 June 08, but we'll keep the forums going.

xMedia 2 Beta is live!

UPDATE, 05 May:  The links to the betas are no longer active.

Hi, folks,

We've posted the beta for Expression Media 2.  Download your copy from here!

Expression Media 2 Beta for Windows

Expression Media 2 Beta for Mac

Bugs and comments go to xmbugs@microsoft.com, please.  That alias hits the inbox of several folks on the product development, marketing, and support teams.  The program managers will pre-sort all the incomings, then enter bugs for the unique reports and pass those along to the daily triage team who prioritizes and assigns the bugs.

Full disclosure:  It's unlikely that everything that's reported will be addressed in the initial release--timelines are a bit tight for that--but we'll review and evaluate everything that we hear from you.  We're planning a relatively quick follow-up release as a home for changes that don't make the initial release.

What's New in 2?

The download pages have a list of what's new in xMedia 2.  I'd like to talk about three other changes that didn't make that list.

Shared Catalogs.  Small workgroups, even just a couple folks, are becoming increasingly interested in asset management and collaborating with on their creative assets.  iVMP and xMedia 1 are a single-user products that allows one to send their catalog to someone else who can then read the catalog with iVMP or our free Reader.  That's a cool scenario, but it doesn't help enough in groups of people working together on creative content.

We've taken our first step in xm2 of improving the sharing model for catalogs.  Now, you can have a catalog file (an IVC) on a shared location and multiple folks can read the catalog simultaneously.  We'll only allow the first person in to edit the catalog, but everyone else can read and watch the changes.  This is the same multiple access model that Microsoft Office uses.

Increasing the level of sophistication and completeness around sharing creative assets will be a theme in future versions.

Stable Import.  You won't see this one as a bullet "on the box", but I think it's some of our most important work.  It's the culmination of work that Yan envisioned a couple years ago in London.  We've rewritten the way that import works.  Processing of the files is no longer done serially through the main application UI, but is now run from multiple background processes--for the geeks in the audience, we're off the main UI thread and and running # of cores + 1 processes for import.

There are several benefits of this approach.  First is that the main UI becomes more responsive (less frozen) during import.  Next is that we can take direct advantage of multiple-core machines to speed import processing (thumbnail extraction/creation, metadata extraction, etc.).

Perhaps most important, though, is that a corrupted file that crashes the importer will no longer take down the app or destroy the catalog.  This has been the greatest vulnerability of both iVMP and xm1.  This approach also sets the stage for easier extensibility on importers, which will be important as we increase coverage on creative asset types in future versions.

Kudos to the team for this work.  Well done.

QuickTime on Windows.  The largest change on the Windows side (Mac folks can check out now ;-) is making QuickTime an optional component rather than a required one.  This is part of an overall strategy to push 3rd party components to the edge of the product, then create extension points that everyone will have access to.  This work is a big first step in that direction.

Users who don't have QuickTime installed will not get some of the functionality of users who do.  There's a lot of cool technology in QuickTime.  The biggest impact will be direct support for some of the file formats including conversion to/from those formats.  But you can get it all back; just install QuickTime.

Still a 2GB catalog limit.  Sorry.  I know this will upset several people, including some of our closest friends.  Even though a 2GB catalog can track roughly 200GB of photos, I know that's not enough for some advanced scenarios.

The truth is that we're planning to rework/recast the catalog dramatically over the next year.  The workgroup story that I told above fits into that.  Changing the catalog in both xm2 and again in xm3 would have broad impact on our entire customer base, so I chose to only make the change once, later.  Sorry, Peter...

It's still a good thing.  Pushing the fix on the 2GB limit was tough, but there's a lot of great work in reliability, performance (network perf is SO much better!), and some interesting and useful new features in xMedia 2.  I hope you'll give the beta a spin and let us know what you think.

Best wishes,
kb

Free upgrades from iView MediaPro 3

Hi, folks,

We've been a bit quiet about this, but I'd like to be less quiet now. :)  If you're an iView MediaPro 3 user, and you haven't already done so, please upgrade to Expression Media.  We're extending the free upgrade period to 30 June 2008 (but that will REALLY be the end! ;-).

To upgrade, please go the iView web site (http://news.iview-multimedia.com/weblog.php) and follow the instructions.  It's easy and quick.  You just need to have already register, or register now.

Why is this so important?  Supportability.  We got lucky with Leopard and had very few OS-related issues (kudos to Douglas and Marek), but we have a couple.  QuickTime 7.1.4 has caused a larger issue to emerge with pathnames being converted to 8.3 format.  There's a work-around, but it's annoying.  The version of SDKs for RAW format handling aren't being kept up with the new cameras (some would argue we're not doing a great job of that with xMedia, either, but you can see my other blog post about that).

We're a small team and are focusing all our efforts now on xMedia.  That's where we can do our best work for you, so we'd very much appreciate folks getting current.

Best,

D3/D300 support

UPDATE (19 March):  The SDK update looks good!  We'll integrate it into the xMedia 1 product code.  Then we need to add a fix to an issue uncovered by QuickTime 7.1.4 that converts paths to 8.3 format.  We're in the midst of the xMedia 2 release cycle so will get this work done and tested for release late in April.

UPDATE (07 March):  Received a fix to the Nikon SDK.  We'll try it out today.

Many apologies for my long absence.  Here's the first post in a more regular stream.

We've been asked (many times) what's up with D3 and D300 support in xMedia.  We don't reverse-engineer the NEF format (or any others, for that matter), so our timing for support is reliant on when the SDKs become available from the camera manufacturers.

In this particular case, we received an update from Nikon just last week (a fix was needed before we could ship).  While integrating that SDK we found another issue and are working with Nikon on a fix.

We need a quick fix to get the updated SDK into xm2.  We'll get the updated SDK into a refresh for xm1 sp1 as quickly as we can.

We're still looking at options, but at the moment it's unlikely that we can release a fix for iView MediaPro 3.1.3.  Sorry, but that code has gotten quite crufty over the past year-and-change.  xMedia is the code base that we can support.

Mac users on Leopard can specify the OS as the decoder and get good support for the D3 and D300, but there's no D3/D300 support released for Tiger (yet?).  We'll have full WIC support for RAW formats in xm2 and an update for xm1 based on the SDK.  I'll get dates to you as soon as we have them.

Cheers,
